The Two Captivities of Cynthia Ann Parker: May 19, 1836

in years to come, when asked, she

professed no memory of the day,

the massacre at Parker’s Fort.

but the popular tale was known by all, so

they described for her every drop of blood,

all the maimed and dying,

her father and uncles,

as if they thought she had never lived it

who can tell the sight of death in

the eyes of a child,

when it comes at the end of a lance?

when the scalp is ripped open and

the blood flows, warm.

and she is taken from her people,

and given to another

who can tell the sight of death in

the eyes of a woman,

when it comes with the slam of bullets ?

husband's death song in the early morning,

as she is taken from her people,

and given to another
